FIELDS OF HOPE

director: Olivier Magis, in productie | docu, Sony Fs7, 1:1,85

“Fields of Hope” traces the tragic story of a small Creole community expelled from the Chagos Islands by the colonial British authorities between 1965 and 1973, so as to rent out the main island to the American Army.

As the expiry of the military lease draws near, the Chagossian refugees exhaust their last options to prevent it being renewed and fulfil their dream of returning home. This struggle, waged on legal, media and sporting battlefields, is embodied in the film by Sabrina Jean, leader of an association of Chagossian refugees in the UK.

Beyond Sabrina’s quest, “Fields of Hope” explores the need to mend the wounds of a traumatic communal heritage in order to pave the way for an optimistic future.
